“GRANDMOTHER’S QUILT”:  BLOCK #218 ON THE TRAIL

On April 8, 2017 Marsh and Karen Dark hosted quilt block #218 on the McDowell Quilt Trail in memory of Marsh’s grandmother, Edelweiss Dark.    The block’s pattern is designed after that of a traditional one on a quilt made and gifted to the Darks from Edelweiss Dark (now deceased), but with a more “contemporary feel”.  The quilt is over one hundred years old and a treasured family heirloom.

The block has special significance in that it honors Edelweiss Dark for serving as an educator in McDowell County for over thirty years.  Karen has also been a teacher in McDowell County and is retiring this year, thus the block represents many years of devoted education in our county.

Upon learning that the Quilt Trail had made a decision to end production of the blocks soon, she followed up on a thought that had been in her mind for some time and purchased the block before that deadline.  Appropriately named “Grandmother’s Quilt”, the block is more notable in that Karen, an art teacher and painter, helped designer Mike Lucas in the actual painting of it.

The block was installed by volunteer Mike Lucas and the Darks were presented with a Certificate of Authenticity by Chairwoman Jill Lucas.
