Gateway To Knowledge

Block Number: 27

The Friends of the Library donated Gateway To Knowledge as a way for the library to express its interest in folklore, take part in a community project and brighten the Logan Street entrance.

The name for the quilt block comes directly from the mission statement for the library and its design incorporates 16 books. Both Elizabeth House, current Library Director, and Patti Holda, who operates the N.C. history and genealogy room helped with the design and color selection.

The dedication ceremony for the new block was held on April 13, 2010 with county commissioners, County Manager Chuck Abernathy, retiring Library Director Jean Krause, library staff, members of the Friends of the Library and the McDowell Quilt Trail all taking part. Sharon Smith, treasurer of the Friends of the Library, was given a certificate of authenticity at the dedication.
